医者だった祖父が、とある山中の無医村に赴任したときの話。
祖父と祖母の家に預けられる形で、当時６歳の俺も一緒にその村で暮らすことになった。
喘息持ちの俺の転地療法も兼ねていた。
初日から村を挙げての大歓迎だった。
鎮守の神だという蛇を祀る神社で盛大な祭りが催され、『神様のご加護』『神様の目印』として、玄関先と裏口に巨大な鈴のついた幣束がとりつけられた。
診療所兼住宅として与えられた建物は真新しく、わざわざ整地した土地に新築されていた。
俺の喘息の発作はみるみる落ち着き、村の者は「蛇さまのおかげ」だと口々に俺に説いた。
人懐っこい村の子供たちともすぐに打ち解けたが、すぐに不可解な噂を耳にすることになる。
「あなたがうらやましい、あなたを蛇さまがお迎えにくると俺のお母さんが言っていた」
その意味を祖父母に問いただしたが、祖父母は顔を曇らせて、「お前は何も心配するな」とだけ言う。
そういえば毎夜、日が暮れるなり家全体が締めつけられるような家鳴りが気になる。
祖父母には「新築の木造家屋はそういうものだ」と説明されたが、一度気になると恐怖を感じる。
だがやがて俺と祖父母は、「蛇さまのお迎え」の本当の意味を知るところとなる。
台風の近づいたある晩のことだった。血相を変えた父と兄が、祖父母と俺を迎えに来た。
困惑する祖父を父が殴りつけ、声を殺して「すぐに逃げろ！」と俺たちを車に押し込めた。
翌日上陸した台風により、山肌を押し流すような地滑りがあり、集落は土砂に飲まれた。
ただ一軒だけ無事だったのが、祖父母と俺たちのいた診療所。だがその姿は異様なものだった。
すべて窓や出入り口が、中から脱出できないように外側から閂と鎖で固められていたのだ。
勘の良い人にはわかったと思う。俺たちは蛇さまへの供物で、鈴や幣束は生贄の目印だ。
供物の俺たちに逃げられた蛇さまの怒りか否か、村人たちの住居は一軒残らず土砂に飲まれていた。
俺たちを生贄にした安心感からか、村人たちは車で小一時間の避難所へ行くこともなく、皆自宅で亡くなっていた。

仕事で雑居ビルに行く機会が多くて、その日も夜八時頃に用事のあるテナントのあるビルに入って、エレベーターで3階に上がった。
エレベーターから降りた所で丁度耳鳴りがした。
さっきの癖があるから、周りを伺っていたんだけど、別れてる廊下の右手から包丁がゆっくり出てきた。
パニックになり、すぐ横のテナントに逃げ込んだ。ドアを押さえながら事情を説明したら、その店の店員は、俺のことを気味悪がりながらも警察を呼んでくれた。
警察が来た頃にはもう不審な人物はいなかったんだけど、監視カメラには包丁を持った男が映っていたらしく、結構な騒ぎになった。
男は包丁を持ってビルに入って廊下をうろついた後、またエレベーターで下に降りて、何もせず出ていったらしい。
その後も周辺で目立った事件はなかったから、なんでそんなことをしていたのかは俺は知らないけど、耳鳴りを気にかけていなかったら、廊下の先で男と鉢合わせていたと思うとゾッとする。

I've read that ringing in the ears is a sign of something, so I've always been careful to look around when it happens.
I often go to crowded buildings for work, and on that day, I entered a building with a tenant I had to deal with around eight o'clock at night, and took the elevator up to the third floor.
Just as I got off the elevator, I heard a ringing in my ears.
I was asking around because of my earlier habit, and a kitchen knife slowly came out from the right side of the hallway where we were parting.

最後の30フレームくらいに映っていたものがすごく気持ち悪かった。
ベッドの上に、頭部を切断された小学生くらいの女の子がいる。
そしてその女の子には中年女性が跨っている。

女の子の頭があったであろう辺り、血で黒ずんだシーツに中年女性は顔を埋めていた。
コマ送りで見ていると、中年女性は少しずつ振り向いているのがわかった。
最後の方のフレームでは彼女の顔が見えてしまう。
見たくなかったのでソフトを閉じた。
それ以来、おさげの白髪頭の後ろ姿を見ると怖くて激しい動悸がするようになった。

そろそろ寝ようかと思い、テントを張り、寝袋にくるまって眠りについた。

どのくらいの時間が経ったのかわからない。頬のあたりに刃物を当てられたような感触がして、目が覚めた。

何が起きているかわからず、恐怖を感じるあまり、目を開けられずにいた。

しかし、今度は耳に切られたような激痛が走り、思わず目を開けてしまった。

そこには教会の神父様の服を着て、白いお面を被った集団がいた。

俺は驚きのあまり大声で叫んだ。

抵抗しようとしたが、必要最低限の物しか持ってなかったため武器も無かった。

為す術もない俺を、彼らは凄い力で押さえつけ、体を刃物で切っていった。

それからしばらくして、激痛のあまり意識が朦朧として、気を失った。

その後、目が覚めるとベッドの上にいた。しかし体は動かない。

しばらくして両親と医者がやってきて、ことのあらましを説明された。

自分はキャンプ場に行く途中で事故を起こし、意識不明の昏睡状態だったらしい。

その後、なんとか松葉杖をついて歩けるようになったころ、あることに気が付いた。

彼らに切られた箇所の全てが事故で怪我した箇所だったのだ。
